Librarians for Peace

Librarians for Peace is an ad hoc group of librarians and library workers, mainly Americans but also people of other nations, using the internet to organize and lobby against armed conflict where we consider it unnecessary, with a focus on our own country and its allies.

• New: How Far Should the Library Aid the Peace Movement and Similar Propaganda?, a presentation at the ALA Annual Conference in Berkeley, California, in 1915, by George F. Bowerman.

• Librarians Say No to Occupation! - an open letter calling for an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq.

• Librarians Say 'Stop the War Now!' - A petition calling for a halt to the war.

• Weapons of Mass Instruction (WOMI) - email discussion list for librarians who oppose the upcoming war on Iraq.

• Taking signatures now: We Need 'Weapons of Mass Instruction' -- Books Not Bombs -- No War Against Iraq! The letter was sent to the recipients at the end of the document Saturday, September 28 with 776 signatures and again, with 1100 signatures, on Saturday, December 7th. At the beginning of the war the petition had close to 1900 signatures.

• SRRT Resolutions on International Issues, including the 2002 Resolution Against the War in Afghanistan.

• Emergency Declaration for a Halt to Preparations for Bombing Afghanistan: Librarians Speak Out!
  Signatures, numbering 280, were taken until the day of the attack.

• Letter to President Clinton, dated 12/16/98, protesting the bombing of Iraq
  Signed by a number of librarians and library workers.

• Letter to President Clinton, dated 11/16/98, protesting the increasing threat of bombing Iraq
  Signed by a number of librarians and library workers.

• Letter to President Clinton, dated 8/20/98, protesting the bombing of Iraq and Sudan in retaliation for the terrorist attacks of the embassies in Kenya and Tanzania
  Signed by a number of librarians and library workers.

• SRRT Resolution calling for a stop to the Persian Gulf War, January, 1991. Signed by a number of librarians and library workers.

• Excerpt from Dennis Thomison's history of ALA describing the events surrounding the "Peace Telegram" to President Roosevelt in 1940
  

• Article from Library Journal, 1940, containing the text of the "Peace Telegram" sent to President Roosevelt by the Progressive Librarians Council in opposition to joining the European War.
